Abstract

Tracey's boyfriend was complaining that she ‘smelled’ and was accusing her of ‘playing away from home’. The atmosphere at home was fraught and she went to the surgery hoping her GP or nurse could back up her protestations of innocence. As far as she was concerned, the only problem was a slight excess of a greyish/white, slightly frothy discharge. On examination, apart from a cervical erosion and discharge, a ‘fishy’ smell was noticed. The pH level of the vaginal fluid was found to be greater than 4.5, which led to suspicions of bacterial vaginosis.
