Abstract

As a component of cell-autonomous immunity, cytosolic bacterial invaders are earmarked with the protein modifier ubiquitin for targeted xenophagic destruction. Otten etal. (2021) reveal that unique bacterial lipids are unconventional sites for ubiquitination and initiate downstream pathogen clearance.
