Abstract
The accuracy of diagnosis in urinarytract infections is improved if bacterial excretion-rates per minute are measured rather than the concentration of organisms per ml. of urine. In a series of 40 patients, urinary-tract infections were found to be associated with bacterial excretion-rates of at least 10,000 clones per minute. Early-morning urine specimens are not suitable for clone-counting, and a timed urine specimen taken in the forenoon is to be preferred.
