Abstract

ABSTRACT The fashion industry is well known for its highly polluting production processes. Researchers around the world still are looking for alternative sustainable raw materials. Bacterial cellulose is one such biomaterial, sustainable, and environmental friendly and has a lot of potential in the fashion industry. In this review, the application possibility of bacterial cellulose in the fashion industry is taken as a major concern. The review mainly focuses on the previous researches in the area to evaluate the various production methods and raw materials used in bacterial cellulose manufacturing using Acetobacter xylinum. In addition to that, the review also consolidates the carbon source materials utilized for the bacterial cellulose production by various researchers. In specific, the fashion application-related research works were analyzed. It was found that production cost and lower yield are the major issues in the bulk production of bacterial cellulose and hence, the search continues for cost-effective raw materials with better cellulose yield. The tea medium is so far successfully used for bacterial cellulose fabric production. However, the inherent properties like higher water-holding capacity, loss of flexibility, and structural disorientation on drying are addressed as major issues concerning the fashion industry.
