Abstract

First sponsored by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, and designed for the student and practitioner, this standard work has enjoyed much respect and usefulness. The new fourth edition, now published independently, adds 11 new chapters designed to strengthen the theoretical basis of microbiology. The topics include chemical anatomy, genetics, bacterial metabolism, host-resistance, effects of phagocytic cells, humoral factors, and others designed to interest and attract the reader. These, together with the three final chapters on treatment, prevention, and epidemiology, account for the 25% enlargement of the volume. Excellent new articles appear on cholera, Mycoplasma infections, and the micrococci. Some articles, such as those on Pasteurella and Brucella , are thoroughly revised. Others unfortunately are not, having only small additions inserted here and there, and minor editing, where updating was seriously needed.
