Abstract
The pet chicken is an increasingly common patient arriving in our consulting rooms. The transformation from commercial, food producing animal to much loved pet has been relatively rapid and therefore it has become necessary for our views and treatments to change correspondingly. In this, the first of two articles, the author covers basic husbandry for the backyard hen.
