Abstract

The amount of intensity and energy albedo in aluminum barriers with thichlesses up to two mean free path lengths of the incident photons was calculated by the Monte Carlo method. Energies of 0.3, 0,5 and 1.0 MeV and incident angles (relative to the normal to the barrier) of 0, 30, 00, 75, and 85° coming from a plane-wave source were investigated. On the basis of an analysis of the data obtained an empirieaI formula for finding the albedo from barriers of finite thickness, Ax=A∞ (1−e−αx), is proposed. Data on the dependence of A∞ (the albedo from a semiinfinite material) and α (an empirical quantity) on the incident photon energy E0 and the incident angle θ0 are presented. The results of the calculation are in good agreement with data obtained by the method of statistical trials and experiment.
