Abstract

The empirical equation for the total backscattering coefficients of electrons and positrons from thick targets is found. This equation is expressed as the dependence from the atomic number Z of the material, the incident particle energy T and the incidence angle ϕ of particles at the absorber. The given formula with 10% accuracy describes the η( Z, T, ϕ) dependence from the incidence angle z0° ⩽ ϕ ⩽ 80° for Z from 6 to 82 in the energy range from 0.1 to 10 MeV. Backscattering coefficient values have been found by computer calculation using the segment model, which accuracy was verified by comparison of the results with the experimental data for electrons.
