Abstract

ABSTRACT Several countries recognize the developmental benefits of encouraging backpacker tourism. This paper contributes towards strategic policy development for backpacker tourism in South Africa. The findings of a consumer survey of 292 international backpackers point to six key issues for strategic intervention: the weakness of current marketing of South Africa as an international backpacker destination; limited opportunities for international backpackers to undertake working holidays; lack of information about volunteer work opportunities; weaknesses in existing product offerings to backpackers; poor public transport and related issues of crime/safety; and, the underdevelopment of domestic backpacking.
