Abstract

AbstractTwo psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the color appearance under non‐uniform surround conditions with variation of stimulus luminance, surround luminance, background luminance, background orientation, and background size. The results show that the background size and surround luminance influence the appearance intensively, but that the orientation of background pattern has little effect. A method to determine optimal parameters for the CIECAM02 color appearance model in lighting applications is proposed. An UGR‐based model also is optimized for brightness estimation. The luminance of adapting field can be estimated by Gaussian‐like functions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Col Res Appl, 42, 440–449, 2017
