Abstract

The permissible additional rail stresses are essential when verifying the track/bridge interaction. Firstly, the current verification values of the German codes and other international codes (Eurocode, UIC, Spain, Italy and China) are introduced in this work. Subsequently, a detailed explanation of track/bridge interaction including the decisive historical investigations, rail stresses and permissible additional stresses is given. Afterwards, the background and related recent investigations on the limitation of additional permissible rail compressive stress (92 MPa/72 MPa) and tensile stress (92 MPa) due to track/bridge interaction in Eurocodes and German codes are comprehensively explained. It can be concluded that these permissible additional stress limitations are no longer dependable with the rapid development of high-speed railway and rail manufacturing technologies. New investigations are necessary to be carried out.
