Abstract

Despite the strongest prevention efforts, all water distribution systems can fall victim to backflow. In 1998, the lack of a simple backflow prevention device on an Air National Guard airport firefighting truck created a potentially hazardous water contamination problem for Charlotte, North Carolina, area residents. This article describes how the incident tested the crisis response skills of the Charlotte‐Mecklenburg Utilities staff, and discusses why backflow preventers should be on all equipment carrying hazardous materials.
