Abstract

Superconducting tunnel junctions Nb/Al/AlO x /Nb have been studied as X-ray detectors. The pulse height spectra and temporal pulse shapes were investigated for junctions of different size. Experimental consequences of quasiparticle diffusion and back tunnelling as well as 2 Δ-phonon escape are considered. Phonon processes can have strong influence on the tunnel detector performance leading to modification of the signal amplitude, duration and polarity.
