Abstract

Marine scientists are getting ready for their newest tool, a versatile robot submersible that can travel into the oceans' deepest abyss. Robert Cooke visits the Massachusetts lab where the future of deep-sea exploration is taking shape. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is building a robot to go to the ocean's deepest spots, including the 11,000-metre Challenger Deep. It will be the world's deepest-diving sub, and should have important technological spinoffs.
