As of July 12, 2020, Latin America is the world's new COVID-19 hotspot [1,2]. In Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru and elsewhere in the region the number of cases and deaths is spiraling out of control. However, a combination of weak health systems, limited fiscal space and poverty prevent resource poor nations from implementing the extensive mitigation strategies being introduced in more advanced economies.
