Abstract

Rotavirus claims the lives of over 600 000 children per annum. The role of sialic acids in the adhesion of the virus to the target host cell is of great interest in understanding how rotavirus causes infection. M. von Itzstein et al. describe in their Communication on page 1055 ff. how a-GM3 (α-2,3-sialyllactose) binds to the rotavirus surface protein VP8*; both the sialic acid and galactose moieties contribute to the binding event. Dr. Gavin Holloway (University of Melbourne) is acknowledged for providing the virus images.
