The carrier concentration can be finely tuned by changing the elemental ratio of Mn to Sb. An appropriate amount of Mn and Sb excess introduces point defects into the lattice, and hence decreases the lattice thermal conductivity. A maximum ZT value of 0.35 was obtained at 673 K for Yb14Mn1.05Sb11, significantly higher than that of stoichiometric polycrystalline Yb14MnSb11. The cover depicts a field emission scanning electron microscope image with elemental mapping for the sintered Yb14MnSb11 sample, combined with the temperature dependence of the figure of merit for different samples.
