The reactive MAX phase particles were encapsulated by the gradual hydrolysis of ultrafine AlN powder in aqueous environment. The oxide coating remains intact during spark plasma sintering when the particles are embedded in a ZrO2 matrix. They can be used as crack bridging or crack healing filler in brittle ceramic matrices. Further details can be found in the article 1900048 by Tobias Fey and co-workers.
