Abstract
This paper presents the initial results, and possible developments, of research on young people's languages carried out between 1995 and 1998 on a group of students from Turin University. The aims were both scientific and didactic ; in particular, our purpose was : 1) to examine young people's languages as a variety of contemporary Italian ; 2) to look at different problems (epistemic and methodological) connected with gathering empirical data ; 3) to collect (by means of a questionnaire) a corpus of data and to enter them into a data base ; 4) to induce the students to reflect on their actual linguistic competences. The results seem quite satisfactory. In addition, the data base which has been created can be the starting point for new research with a wider scope on young people's languages in Turin and in Piedmont
