Abstract

In 2013, Canadian filmmaker Matthew Clarke launched Convos with My 2-Year-Old, a web series that recreates conversations between Clarke; his wife, Leila Harrison; and their young daughter, Coco. The spin: Coco is portrayed by a full-grown man (David Milchard), complete with a five o'clock shadow. It represents one of the finest examples of growing body of web comedy about parenting and family life, which also includes ‘mommy blogs,’ BatDad Vines, and the Twitter account-turned-sitcom, Shit My Dad Says (now inactive). The initial episode has been viewed over 11 million times on YouTube, and the series now attracts over 750,000 subscribers. As Coco has aged, the show has changed its title, and, as of July 2015, Convos is in its sixth season. Clarke kindly agreed to this interview in August 2014.
