Abstract

As one of the practical viscosity measurement methods of liquids, the authors have proposed a new simple method of shear force measurement by a digital electric balance, and have been investigating its applicability for liquids with wide range of viscosity. The method is the combination of measurement of shear force caused by natural convection around a uniformly heated vertical plate and the similarity solution for flow field of the corresponding system. Small amount of sample liquid is desirable when conducting measurements, but large quantity of liquid is assumed in the boundary layer theory when deducing the similarity solution. Then, in this study, for the purpose of investigating the aforementioned gap between the experiment and theory, visualization of flow field in measuring container has been performed by using silicone oil with four kinds of definite viscosities, and the effect of liquid height on viscosity measurement has been examined.
