Abstract Photometric and spectroscopic observations of 267 giant M stars located in four regions of the sky are dis- cussed. The observations in each region were completed in short time intervals in order to guard against spec- trum and brightness variability effects. The spectral classifications for stars with classes MO to M7 were based on Mt. Wilson and MK standards. For later types, the Case system of classification, which is based on small-dispersion observations in the near-infrared region of the spectrum, was used. The relationships of the Mt. Wilson and the MK classifications to the Case classifications for the earlier M stars were investigated. The results are summarized in Table I. B - V colors were observed for stars with spectral types MO to M8, and V-I colors for types MO to M9. Intrinsic colors were then derived and correlated with spectral types determined during the epochs of the photometric observations. The results are summarized in Table II.
