Abstract

This communication presents a novel azimuthal six-channel retrodirective metagrating (MG). The designed MG employs the planar hexagonal unitcell to ensure retrodirective channels at every 60° interval in the azimuth direction. The efficiency of the MG can be optimized by adjusting the length and height of the unitcell, resulting in a low-profile MG. The characteristics of MGs operating at elevation angles of θ <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">i</sub> = 40 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">°</sup> , 50°, and 60° are confirmed by the HFSS full-wave simulation. The MG at θ <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">i</sub> = 50 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">°</sup> is fabricated and measured. The measured results indicate that the MG operates as an azimuthal six-channel with an average retroreflection efficiency of 91%.
