Abstract

In La vida es sueño the classic contrast between man's dignity and his wretchedness is interwoven with other themes as for example the notions of guilt or freedom, in a clear fusion of verba (words) and res (things). The cri de cœur of Segismundo in his despondency refers the reader back to a rhetorical and moral philosophical tradition, in particular to Aftonius, Seneca, Cicero and the Psalms which, as well as giving him his essential traits, sets out the path of virtue towards overcoming misfortune and being forgiven.
