Abstract

The propagation constants of axisymmetric modes in a circular waveguide with an inhomogeneous dielectric profile are calculated, which are important in waveguide discontinuity problems but can not be solved by using conventional mode-matching methods. The field components D/sub p/ and E/sub /spl phi// are expanded in terms of the eigenmodes in an empty waveguide. The effects of dielectric profile parameters are analyzed. A transition phenomenon is observed when the dielectric constant in the core region is higher than that of the cladding.
