Abstract

Benard convection within a cylindrical box heated from below was investigated experimentally using interferometric measuring devices and three-dimensional evaluation techniques. Nonaxisymmetric longitudinal convection rolls have been observed atquasistatic heating rates and for diameter-to-height ratios of 6 and 6.8. The quantitatively evaluated density profiles show that the flow pattern is three-dimensional.
