Abstract

In June 2022, poliovirus was confirmed in an unvaccinated New York resident.1 In September 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that this case, in addition to polioviruses found in wastewater samples from nearby communities, met the World Health Organization's criteria for circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses.2 The CDC advises vaccination in those who were not vaccinated against polio, did not complete a vaccine series, or in some cases, received the oral polio vaccine outside of the United States.
