Abstract
A study has been made on axial dispersion in laminar flow in helical coiled tubes, for conditions in which molecular diffusion plays a dominating role. The axial dispersion coefficients have been calculated for Dean numbers smaller than 16. In this region the ratio of the dispersion coefficient in coiled tubes to that in straight tubes can with good approximation be given as a function of Dn 2 Sc, provided R/a > 20. This ratio decreases from 1, for Dn 2 Sc ≈ 100, to ≲ 0·25 for Dn 2 Sc ≈ 5000.
