Abstract

A new structural configuration of hybrid sandwich composite rail vehicle tubular component made of foam-cored composite sandwich panels with integral FRP cylindrical energy absorbing inserts, is examined under axial loading. The mechanical response as well as the crashworthy behaviour of these small-scale bodyshells is investigated both at macro- and microscale. Failure modes and the energy absorbing characteristics of the collapsed structural components are analyzed, taking into account the effect of material and design parameters. Furthermore, great in-depth effort is spent in exploring different triggering conditions as a function of energy absorbing efficiency.
