Abstract

T HE PATIENT with acute and chronic pulmonary disease presents a challenge for the anesthesiologist because of the potential for perioperative hypoxemia, hypercarbia, bronchospasm, and postoperative pulmonary complications. In order to avoid an anesthetic disaster, careful preoperative preparation, anesthetic choice and intra-operative management, and postoperative care are required. This article reviews the perioperative management of the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), restrictive lung disease, and acute respiratory failure.
