Abstract

Seismic amplitudes and the degree to which they change with offset have proven more effective at high-grading prospects and providing substantial risk reduction than using structural information alone. The discriminating power of amplitudes comes from changes observed in rock properties when hydrocarbons displace the omnipresent subsurface fluid brine. These rock property changes in turn control the strength of reflections and the AVO response.
