Abstract

Although AVO has proven useful in hydrocarbon exploration in shallow gas sands, there are few examples of its application to carbonate exploration. This paper presents a conjecture that AVO can help differentiate between shale and porous dolomite in Devonian reefs, a critical problem in Canada where oil production from Nisku reefs in the Devonian formation accounts for a large part of industry activity. Devonian formations have generated 60% of Canadian oil production and 25% of gas production.
