Abstract

This paper focuses on the onboard avionics system functionality that is needed to mitigate the safety hazards when autonomous cargo Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are utilized on missions across our future National Air Space. This paper describes the technology on-board UAS anticipated to be available by 2025, the timeframe that autonomous UAS may be introduced into our NAS. It describes the unique performance characteristics and plausible missions for autonomous cargo UAS, summarize the safety hazards that these UAS may be susceptible to when operating in our future NextGen Air Transportation System and the avionics that can be developed and integrated to address the safety hazards that autonomous UAS are susceptible to.
