Abstract

The post-deregulation aviation industry has been plagued with fare wars. Very few airlines have been successful in this low-cost business model. In a desperate effort to survive, many major airlines have tried to re-engineer themselves into low-cost, no-frills companies; however, they have not been able to succeed nearly as well as Southwest Airlines. This chapter describes the professional environment within which typical aircraft mechanics work. It presents a perspective on how military training/experience may influence a mechanic’s commitment to safety. The chapter describes typical reasons why a particular individual may be motivated to promote safety in their work environment. Most people in the aviation industry are very passionate about their association with airplanes: as children, they were fascinated by the sight of an airplane taking off into the sky or just passing overhead, and as adults, they are fascinated by the technologies that enable flight and enhance the experience of flight.
