Abstract

Avian influenza, or “bird flu”, is an infectious disease caused by avian influenza viruses that are found naturally in wild birds. The virus is transmitted between birds but usually does not result in disease. However, the virus can be transmitted from wild birds to domestic poultry. In general, domestic poultry, especially chickens, are much more likely to suffer serious disease than wild birds. There are two main forms of the disease in birds distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence.
