Abstract

We have found that diffusion-limited growth models with constant, averaged interdiffusion coefficients are inadequate as a description of the kinetics of the solid-state amorphization reactions in Ni/Zr multilayered composites. Although solid-state amorphization reactions appear to be diffusion controlled, the averaged interdiffusion coefficient appears to decrease as the reaction progresses. This observation provides some explanation for discrepancies in a number of measurements associated with these phenomena.
