Abstract

This paper proposes a novel method for fault classification in transmission lines. It uses the Average Wavelet Energy (AWE) to quantify high-frequency components during the fault period and determine the fault type by comparing values of AWE for different phases. The proposed method is tested with real fault events in the waveform library developed by Grid Protection Alliance (GPA) in partnership with Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The results show that the proposed method performs better than the traditional method implemented in openXDA in terms of the accuracy of fault type classification.
