Abstract

In Chap. 5, we turn to the expected average cost criterion. Using a so-called average cost minimum nonnegative solution approach provided in Sect. 5.3, we establish the average cost optimality inequality and the existence of average cost optimal policies in Sect. 5.4. We also obtain the average cost optimality equation in Sect. 5.5. Finally, in Sect. 5.6, we present an example showing that the existence of an average cost optimal policy does not imply the existence of a solution to the average cost optimality equation.
