Abstract

ABSTRACT “Ave Maria: Representation of Womanhood in Patriarchal Malta” is a research project that examines the situation of women in Maltese society. The main tool of research will be a representational number of interviews with women, and entering into a dialogue with them about the current situation of women in Malta and how this could have been affected by the image of Mary, as conveyed by the institution of the Catholic Church. The dynamics explored in the interviews are juxtaposed against salient themes in feminist and queer theology. The aim of the research project is to challenge how patriarchal systems have molded the figure of Mary to reinforce the status quo. In the second part of the project, the insights emerging from the interviews were used to devise a script centered on the figure of Mary in order to show how this figure can dialogue with women in the Maltese society.
