Abstract

Summary
Between the 1970s and 1990s, there was a significant increase in the consumption of alcohol in Brazil. At the middle of the 1990s, the per capita use of alcohol in Brazil was 5.0 liters[1], and currently, it is approximately 8.7 liters[2]. The abuse of alcohol can cause a variety of problems, including disorientation, cognitive and motor impairments that lead to accidents and deaths[3]. Some authors reported that alcohol misuse is a robust risk factor to disability-adjusted life-years in young people[4]. When car accidents are associated with the use of alcohol, the consequences tend to be more severe than with other substances[5]. Peltzer[6] observed that about 17% of drivers from 22 countries reported having driven after heavily drinking alcohol in the last year. In United States, a survey has shown that about 14%
