Abstract

Similarly to several developing countries, Brazil is aging quickly causing an increase in the number of elderly living in institutions, which most of the time does not have all necessary dental assistance. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the oral conditions of institutionalized elderly individuals. This research was carried out with 80% of all institutionalized individuals living in public asylums of Maringá-Paraná. Eighty-two elderly were evaluated through an extra and intra-oral physical examination. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and represented in frequency and percentage. From the total of the sample, 57.3% (n=47) were denture wearers. From them, 40.5% (n=19) were using denture for at least ten years. Regarding clinical matter, 72.4% (n=34) presented prostheses in inadequate conditions of use. Independent of wearing or not the prostheses, among the 82 individuals evaluated, it was verified that 73.2% (n=60) of them presented the need of upper arch rehabilitation calling for total denture (TD) and 67.1% (n=55) needed lower arch rehabilitation. From the presented result and, considering that the public asylum institutions do not offer dental treatment and assistance, these elderly individuals are being directed for assistance at the Clinic of Dentistry in the University of Maringá - PR (CESUMAR).
