Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate if the aesthetic perception of the facial profile convexity is similar among the different observers. MethodsProfile silhouettes were built on the Adobe Photoshop Cs5® program. From a standard profile as a reference with a facial convexity of 12° we created four different silhouettes with a convexity of 0°, 6°, 18° and 24°. Each one was evaluated by orthodontic specialists, students of Dental Medicine and a control group constituted by laypersons, through an online questionnaire. ResultsWe verified statistically significant differences between the groups in relation to the aesthetic perception of the facial profile convexity. The orthodontic specialists and the students of Dental Medicine considered the facial convexity of 12° to be the most aesthetic. The laypersons prefers the 18° of facial convexity. ConclusionsThe aesthetic perception of the facial profile convexity is not identical among the orthodontic specialists, the students of Dental Medicine and the control group.
