Abstract

Ingestion of high sulphur diets may cause polioencephalomalacia and produce excessive ruminal hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This study determines sulfide concentrations in 4 extensively reared Nelore calves by detector tube method, which were assessed every 96 hours during 40 days, totalizing ten evaluations per animal. Results revealed that ruminal sulfide hydrogen values were inferior to 100 ppm. Furthermore, we observed that Nelore calves kept on Brachiaria decumbens pasture with 0,15% sulphur in the dry matter presented maximum H2S concentration (100 ppm).
