Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the adherence to the infection prevention measures related to catheters among health professionals of hospitals from Maringa – PR. The method used was to interview the health professionals through a form with closed questions about the proposed theme. 133 interview were conducted, 70% of them in a public hospital and 30% of them in a private hospital. When questioned about a received training on the indication, insertion and maintenance of Venous Catheters, 64% of the interviewee in the public hospital said that did not participate in such training; in the private hospital this number reached 72%. About touching the area of the catheter, 73% of the public hospital professional carries with this procedure daily to observe if the patient presents pain, while in the private hospital, 82% of the interviewee does this procedure. In relation to the use of gloves, 82% of the interviewee from the public hospital always use gloves to handle the catheter, while in the private hospital, 59% adopt this practice. About the use of dressing, 86% of the interviewee from the public hospital use sterile gauze dressing; 5% use sterile transparent film dressing, 9% do not use any dressing; in the private hospital, 55% use sterile gauze dressing and 45 % use sterile transparent film dressing. It could be observed in this study the necessity to find ways to improve adherence of the health professionals to the practice of infection control, as well as to observe techniques of prevention and the control standardization for the use of catheters.
