Abstract

An account is given in this paper of soft technology options which are non-polluting, less energy-intensive and inexpensive to establish. Our endeavor in what follows, has also been to spell out some guidelines and strategies which can easily be adopted for sustaining growth with equity using soft energy options. The soft technologies tend to be employment-generating economically sensible and environmentally-benign. Our evaluation indicates that human survival and development will depend upon (i) whether or not we can harness soft technology options for human welfare, (ii) whether we can or not forestall the serious natural resource and environmental damages perpetuated by the high-tech culture and (iii) whether or not we can develop the appropriate adjustments and/or institutions to share the fruits of technological developments equitably.
