Abstract

The need to improve the teaching of business subjects necessitated this study to ascertain the level of availability of modern instructional materials for teaching business subjects in secondary schools in Anambra State. One research question guided the study and one null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted and 261public secondary schools constituted the population of the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 66 public secondary schools. A Checklist was used for data collection. The checklist was validated by three experts in the field business education and measurement and evaluation. Frequency and percentage was used to analyze data to answer the research question while Chi-square was used to test the null hypothesis. Findings revealed that modern instructional materials were not available for teaching business subjects in secondary schools in Anambra State. Out of the 30 items listed, seven items were available while 23were not available in the study area. The findings also showed that school location was a significant factor on availability of modern instructional materials. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended among others that, the Federal and State Governments should ensure adequate provision of modern instructional materials for use by students and teachers in the field of study. This is because modern instructional materials are expensive to acquire, and cannot be left in the hands of secondary school administrators.
