Abstract

Summary A plotcoxidation product of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 3-hydroxymethyl oxindole (HMO), is as effective as IAA in stimulating elongation of wheat coleoptile sections, even at a lower concentration. IAA fails to show stimulation of growth after pretreatment of the coleoptiles with chemicals inhibiting oxidation of IAA, but the growth promoting effect of HMO remains unaffected by such pretreatments. In time-course experiments also, the stimulatory effect of HMO is same as IAA. HMO prepared from IAA from different sources are effective to the same extent in stimulation of elongation of wheat coleoptiles.
