Abstract

This chapter focuses on the history of the police in South Africa, the changes that were introduced in the police, the past outlook of the reserve, and current challenges as well as the envisaged new changes for the police reserve in South Africa. The need to introduce a police reserve in South Africa can only be explained against the backdrop of the unique history of the country and, more specifically, the development and transformation of the justice system up until now. The current South African law is grounded in the customs, traditions, and laws of the peoples of many cultures. The South African Police (SAP) was eventually officially created after the Union of South Africa was established in 1913. The current SAP Service (SAPS) has undergone a paradigm shift since the abolishment of the apartheid regime in 1994. The South African Reserve Police Service serves as an important force multiplier and is an essential part of the police service.
