Abstract
AbstractNumbers m‐2 of larvae and pupae of frit fly were assessed in grass fields at the University of Leeds farm, West Yorkshire, between October and April, 1984 to 1986. During each year, larval densities declined significantly from October so that by December 1984, January 1986 and December 1986, 72.6 %, 45.6 % and 53.6 % respectively of the initial numbers of larvae in October had been lost. This was possibly due to the influence of the yet unidentified autumn‐winter density dependent mortality factor which is implicated in the significant relationship between the initial numbers of larvae in October and percentage larval decline from October to December/January. The observed decline in larval numbers during late winter and early spring (March to April) of 1985 and 1986, was associated with pupation which appeared to have commenced between mid‐February and early March.
