Abstract
Local authorities and urban research in Great Britain. This paper discusses the relationship between local authorities as clients and users of research and the scientific establishments which carry out applied research and development work for them. A short description of the structure of local government in Britain and the organisation of research in the social sciences is given as a background to the examples of successful crossferti-lisation between the local client and the institutions responsible for the production of the necessary body of knowledge. The role of central government as a sponsor of urban research is shown. The examples of institutions capable of producing successful research include a university unit, the planning department of a polytechnic, a private institute and a local authority which both commissions and carries out research towards its policy formulation and implementation. The paper concludes that pragmatic forms of cooperation may be well suited to fulfil the complex demand of decision and action oriented clients while making a contribution
